Q. Boats for the Beaver River paddle: are teams
of two allowed to use their own boats? If so, do they have to
be an open-top canoe? If so, is our entry fee the
same?
A. Everyone competing in the Ultimate Adventure
Challenge will use canoes provided by us. You can not use your
own boat for this race if you're competing in the Ultimate Adventure
Challenge.
Q. Boats for the Georgian Bay paddle: what is
an "OC2" boat (quoted from website)? Are we allowed
to use a tandem kayak in this section?
A. An OC2 is an Outrigger Canoe for 2 people.
You can not use a tandem kayak for this race. We tried to source
enough identical tandem kayaks for all teams for this event, but
it wasn't possible in Ontario. We also tried to source enough
identical single kayaks for teams for this event, but again, it
wasn't possible. We considered letting teams use canoes for this
race, but we feel it's not safe, since we're planning on running
this event even if there are large waves/swells. Teams of 2 in
the Ultimate Adventure Challenge must stay together in this race,
however they will be required to paddle two separate single kayaks.
Q. Timing: how does this work? I am assuming
we have to stay within 100m of our teammates during the navigation
events. How are we timed in events such as the XC MTB race and
the trail run (and the open water paddle if we are in separate
boats)?
A. Competitors in the Ultimate Adventure Challenge
will use Sport Ident (electronic timing). The same timing system
used in orienteering events. If you're competing on a team of
2 you'll need to stay with your team-mate at all times in all
events. Most likely, both you and your team-mate will be issued
an SI card. You'll both need to punch-in at every checkpoint,
and when punching you can't be separated by more than 5 seconds.
For the XC MTB race and the Trail Run, you may be issued a ChampionChip
electronic timing card, similar to what you've used at other XC
mtb races. In the Georgian Bay open water paddle, competitors
competing in the KUAC will use Sport Ident Timing. We'll be having
a mass start for this event, and then teams will be required to
land their boats on the beach and run up to punch the finish.
Q. XC MTB race: how technical will the single-track
component of this race be? I'm assuming there will be lots of
climbing, but what about steep descents, slow
twisty sections, rock/root dodging? (just curious how to prepare)
A. The single-track components will be technical.
Steep Descents? Yes. Slow Twisty sections? Yes. Rock/Root dodging?
Yes. If you have time, and want to get a feel for the single track
components, go for a ride at either "Three Stage", or
in "Kolapore". You will ride between 10 to 15k of single
track in each area during the x-country mtb race.
Q. For the navigation races, will we be on orienteering
maps or on topo maps?
A. For the navigation races you will use a few
different maps of different scales. They will include orienteering
maps (1:15000), topographic park maps (1:20000), and government
topo's (1:50000).
Q. Accommodations: will camping be available
onsite? Nearby?
A. Camping won't be available onsite, however
it will be available within a few kilometres of the host site.
Q: What type of canoe is being supplied for
the teams of two for the Beaver River Paddling Race that is part
of the Ultimate Adventure Challenge race?
A: The canoes we will supply for the teams of
two in the Keen Ultimate Adventure Challenge all be identical.
They'll be "Clipper Yukon's", you can see them on the
web at http://www.clippercanoes.com/boat_specs.php?model_id=125
These boats are pretty quick, and decent to race in, and they
must be used by all teams in the Keen Ultimate Adventure Challenge
Race.
We are also supplying the same boats for rental for the Beaver
River Paddling Race and for the "Multisport Stage Race"
that includes the Beaver River paddle. But we are also allowing
teams to bring their own canoes for these two races, so someone
could show up with a sleaker boat if they own one.
Q. Will there be aid stations during the XC
Mountain Bike Race and the Trail Run on Saturday?
A. Yes, there will be aid stations in both races.
The aid stations will have water and sports drinks available.
During the 60km XC Mountain Bike Race aid stations will be at
the 25k and 50k points. In the 30km XC Mountain Bike Race an aid
station will be at the 20k point. During the 20k trail run an
aid station will be at the 13k mark. During the 10k trail run,
an aid station will be at the 5k mark. There will be no aid stations
during the 5k trail run.
