ARC Enduro Adventure Race - Barrie (Hardwood Hills)- June 5, 2004

Post Race Review

Getting Ready for the Race

On June 5th, 2004, participants, volunteers and spectators gathered for the start of the ARC Enduro Adventure Race at the Hardwood Hills in Barrie, Ontario.

This year’s race was part of the first annual Adventurefest Canada, and it was the first time that ARC had held a summer Enduro adventure race at Hardwood Hills (where the annual ARC Winter Adventure race takes place every March)

The ARC Enduro Adventure race was the first of four main events that were taking place during the Adventurefest Canada weekend, including the Bike for the Cure, Hardwood Hills Short Track Mountain Bike Races and Gear Racing Canada Cup.

Hardwood Hills was alive with action and anticipation, as the race instructions and maps were distributed and reviewed in preparation for the start of the race.

The Start
The race started at the Hardwood Hills Mountain Bike Centre at 10am, when teams headed off on the trails to find the first three checkpoints.

After finding checkpoints A,B and C on the Hardwood property the teams made their way onto some local country roads, and rode to the first transition area in a section of the Simcoe Forest.

The Trek
Teams left their bikes at Transition Area 1, and headed out on foot to find the next three CP's.

This section of the race proved to be somewhat difficult for a number of teams who became confused by the interlocking logging and ATV trails, as well as the tall tree stands that prevented teams from judging their location and that of the checkpoints.

After approximately one hour, the first teams emerged from the forest trek, and got back onto their bikes for the second bike section of the race.

The Bike Ride to Bass Lake
From TA1 teams were required to find and follow some snowmobile/ATV trails that took them to CP's 6 and 7, before they were back on the country roads, as they headed east to the paddle section of the race at Bass Lake.

The Paddle
Upon reaching CP8/TA2 of the race, at the southwest corner of Bass Lake, the teams began the paddling section of the race.

Teams were required to cross Bass Lake diagonally to the northeast and then follow the northern shoreline to and meandering river that they followed north from Bass Lake to CP10.

This river had a few spurs that they had to navigate, but it also required that teams slide themselves and their boat under a low level bridge go up and back down the river.

Once back on the lake, the teams headed southwest back to TA2 and their bikes, but this section of the paddle (and other sections as well) became more difficulty then expected as the wind picked up and created some unusually high waves that made the paddle more difficult and expected then anticipated.

The Ride to the Finish Line
The last biking section of the race included some additional checkpoints, for the top teams, in a section of the Simcoe Forest to the west of Bass Lake, while teams that did not make the time cut-offs at Bass Lake were required to ride directly back to the finish line at Hardwood Hills.

Of the almost 50 teams that started the race, all but a few were able enjoy the satisfaction of coming across the finish-line; and everyone was able to enjoy the post race BBQ meal and a beverage (hopefully a Labatt Sterling) in the beer tent.

The top Coed team (Quest) finished in time of 6hrs. 43mins., followed by Team The Spontaniacs and Team Explore.

The top Open Male team (Team P3) finished in a time of 6 hrs 48 mins, followed by Team Techlantic and Team Effort.

Team Unsanctioned, Mixed Nuts and City Slickers were the top three Masters teams.

Congratulations and thank you to all the Teams and Volunteers that participated in the ARC Enduro Adventure Race.

A special thank you to all the sponsors and supporters of the race, including:

Merrell Canada, Bolle, Labatt Sterling, Axis Gear, Custom Sole Footbeds, Camelbak, Extreme Magazine and Adventure Sports Magazine.
